Education & Training
Effective education is an integral component of the Office of Institutional Integrity (OII) Compliance Program. We encourage every employee to take advantage of our Office’s ongoing educational opportunities.
Faculty, staff, and students that have access to PHI and/or work in a designated Health Care Component at ECU are enrolled in OII’s online training(s) as a new employee or student and also on an annual basis. The individual person’s access and role regarding PHI will determine what HIPAA training modules are required to be completed. There may also be compliance training requirements to be met. OII’s main training modules include HIPAA Privacy, HIPAA Security, and Compliance & Integrity.
OII Training Modules
The training modules offered by OII are accessed through Cornerstone (faculty/staff) or Canvas (student). Your ECU email and password are the login credentials used to access the training modules.
HIPAA Privacy Training
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) sets forth requirements for the use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI) and provides patients and research subjects with certain rights related to their PHI. Annual HIPAA privacy training is required by HIPAA for ECU employees and certain students, volunteers, and contractors who have access to PHI or provide clinical services.
HIPAA Security Training
In accordance with the HIPAA Security Rule, ECU workforce members must be trained on HIPAA security issues and reminded of their security responsibility to protect electronic protected health information (ePHI). This training is separate and different from the HIPAA Privacy training. The training aims to assist in protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of ePHI. OII provides guidance on the responsibilities of a HIPAA System Administrator. Additionally, OII staff are available to meet and/or answer any questions an individual has about HIPAA System Administrator responsibilities by emailing integritycompliance@ecu.edu.
Compliance & Integrity Training
OII provides training on healthcare compliance and integrity including, but not limited to, the Federal False Claims Act, the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute, the Prohibition on Physician Self-Referrals (Stark Law), Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other applicable state and federal laws and regulations. We also offer individual and group educational sessions regarding documentation and coding.
