Education & Training

Effective education is an integral component of the Office of Institutional Integrity Compliance Program. We encourage every employee to take advantage of our Office’s ongoing educational opportunities relating to compliance within the University. We offer general compliance training to all new Health Sciences employees as well as annually to all Health Sciences employees. As part of our provider monitoring activities, we also offer individual educational sessions regarding documentation and coding for those providers whose documentation has been reviewed. Please contact us at any time if you would like an individual education session related to documentation and coding, even if you have not been selected for a random documentation review.

If you or your department has a particular compliance topic of interest, we would be happy to provide the relevant training or information. Current trainings provided include:

  • PHI (including research) storage/transmission compliance
  • Documentation for billing compliance
  • HIPAA privacy and security topics
  • Best practices
  • HIPAA system administrator requirements
  • Compliance trends and regulatory requirements
  • Special department or clinic requests

HIPAA Privacy Training

The privacy rules under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) set forth requirements with respect to the use and disclosure of protected health information as well as provide patients and research subjects with certain rights related to their protected health information. Annual HIPAA privacy training is required under the HIPAA privacy rules for ECU employees and certain students, volunteers, and contractors who provide services within a designated ECU Health Care Component.

Maintaining privacy of the protected health information of our patients and research subjects is paramount, and thus it is crucial that all relevant individuals complete the required HIPAA privacy training. Please read the following information below to determine which specific training you are required to complete. If you have questions regarding these guidelines, please contact OII at 252-744-5200.

HIPAA Security Training

As a covered entity, ECU workforce members must be trained on HIPAA security issues and reminded of their security responsibility to protect electronic protected health information. This training is separate and different from the Privacy training. It will help to assist in protecting the confidentiality, security and integrity of ePHI. Information Technology alone is NOT the answer to securing confidential information, including ePHI; it must be combined with awareness and changes in human behavior.
